Transphobia is a general term for discrimination against, or dislike of, people who are transgender. It has been noted that cisgender people can experience forms of transphobia when they are thought to be transgender, or if their gender expression does not conform to social expectations.[1] Deadnaming—the act of purposefully using a transgender person's pre-transition name instead of their chosen one—is an example of one such harmful behavior.[2]
Etymology[]
The term's first recorded use was in 1992.[3]
Terms used[]
- Gender ideology: A term used by opponents of a wide range of people and their rights, including: transgender people, intersex people, non-binary people, people who oppose gender essentialism, people who do not adhere to traditional gender roles, people who support reproductive rights, people fighting for gender equality, and more. "Gender ideology" frames concepts like gender equality and the existence of LGBTQIA+ people as radical beliefs that must be resisted to prevent harm to society, especially to children.[4][5] Gender identity ideology and transgender ideology are similar terms.[6][7]
