Transneutral is a term that has recently emerged. Although the term may be growing in usage, and is significant and well-sourced enough to warrant inclusion on this wiki, it may still be relatively unknown outside of the platform or community where it originated. The exact definition and name may not have stabilized, and may change significantly as more people identify with it.

Transneutral refers to transgender people who have a gender identity that is predominantly neutral. Another definition refers to transgender people who typically were assigned a binary gender at birth, and whose genders are mainly neutral or even androgynous. Some people who are transneutral may also choose to medically transition.

Etymology

It is currently unknown who specifically coined the term transneutral. The prefix "trans-" means "across, beyond, through, to change", and seems to be used in a similar way here as it is for transgender. The word neutral can be defined as something that has no particular characteristics . So by combining these definitions, transneutral means a person who is transitioning to a neutral gender, i.e. a gender that has no characteristics of man nor woman.

Community

Flag

One of the first flag designs for transneutral was created by the Pride-Flags group on DeviantArt, on October 5th, 2016. The flag features yellow bars of various shades, but the meanings of the colors were not specified. This design also has two variants that are recolors of the original yellow design, with one being green and the other being purple.

There is another flag design that is often credited as an alternative transneutral flag design. However, this flag is actually meant to be a design for "binary to non-binary", often abbreviated as BTX or BTNB. This is the concept of a person who was assigned a binary gender, and is transitioning to a non-binary gender. Transneutral would be considered a subset of BTNB. The pink and blue represents the binary genders, while the shades of yellow represent nonbinary genders. There is also an alternative to this flag where shades of purple are used in place of the yellows.
