The Asexual Visibility and Education Network, also known as AVEN, is the largest online hosting presence for asexual individuals, serving as a large archive of resources regarding asexuality. It was founded by David Jay to serve two objectives: getting asexuality recognized as a legitimate sexual orientation, and to build a supportive community of asexuals and allies.[1] Their logo is an upside-down equilateral triangle, with black-to-grey-to-white gradient. It is meant to be an interpretation of the asexual pride flag.[2] In 2021, it reportedly had a growing 135,539 members.[3]
History[]
David Jay launched AVEN's website in 2001, frustrated by the lack of resources available on asexuality and the general public ignorance surrounding his identity.[4] David appeared on The View in 2006, where he was ostracized and critiqued for his sexuality in an attempt for the panel to make jokes about his sexual orientation.[5] In March 2006, David appeared on the Tucker Carlson Show.[6]
In 2009, AVEN members participated in the San Francisco Pride Parade for the first time.[7] Michael Doré joined the organization in 2009 as part of a UK branch. In 2021, the organization helped circulate information regarding International Asexuality Day, but does not claim responsibility or ownership over the day.[3]
